CPlusPlus down and gone.

Yesterday, 27 Nov, was quite a scare with CPlusPlus "gone" for quite a few hours. IsItDown reported this site as being unreachable for over 4 days, not the case.
it was off for me for multiple days. being a holiday here, not sure if it was all 4 or not, but it seems like it was at least fri/sat/sun. Maybe location / black hole type problem? Its certainly back now, so whatever. I assumed the owner was adding a shiny or more ads or something.

For me the site was down Sunday, yesterday. It was still reachable on Saturday, the 26th.

The last time I checked was mid-day (West Coast US) on Saturday. Early morning Sunday and no-go.
Yep. But figured the owner was doing some site maintenance/server update/moving etc. As we never hear from the owner, we'll never know....
Some information about the situation on their Twitter would have been nice:
https://twitter.com/cpluspluscom

(But it seems the Twitter account is dormant. Or have they moved on to Mastodon already?)

Example of how this is supposed to look:

scary to think, this site could just vanish one day if the owner no longer sees it as profitable, all the threads, posts and peoples time answering and helping to grow the C++ community would be washed away in a flash.

Not only that but many members who have gained friendships or acquaintances on this forum will be at a loss :(

The site owner is really hands-off for the most part, even when they do something we only know about it after-the-fact.

And the site was "on hiatus" again for most of Monday for me. I gave up checking in the late afternoon, this fine snowy Tuesday morning was my first look of the day.

This isn't the first time the site has gone "dark" for a while, but each time it happens I wonder if the lights will ever go back on.

The fora here are a lot friendlier than SO, hardly any rules to follow. And those are informal and simply suggested. SO rigorously enforces. As well as being very unfriendly to noobs.

I said to myself "it's time to do a maintenance" - with the same feelings that yours :)

Two similar sites I know are:

https://forums.codeguru.com/forum.php
(very little traffic at present)

https://cboard.cprogramming.com/
(traffic but not as much as this site)
CPlusPlus has been like a very slow moving yo-yo the past couple of of days. Up, prolonged down, up, hard down.

At least this isn't a pay site.

This trend is not looking good for continued use of the fora. My natural pessimism and cynicism are winning at this time.

I mean, traffic here seems to be at an all-time low, especially for term-time.

I imagine that is because it is very difficult to login via Firefox at the moment (at least from Windows). That would discourage any new users.

But I rather like this site and forum, so will endeavour to persevere with the occasional issues.

dreamincode.net went for good in the summer.
cplusplus.com wobbling.
cboard.cprogramming.com seems OK, but traffic is at an all-time low.

I'm beginning to wonder what keeps the lights on for communities like this.

You'd think this site owner would fix the firefox logon issue to get the traffic...

The more intriguing question is why is the traffic across all of these sites substantially down on what it was? The only 'informal' site I know that still has good traffic is https://www.vbforums.com/ (a sister site of https://forums.codeguru.com/forum.php ) which mainly deals with vb.net and VB6 queries.
One low traffic consequence of the up-down status here...

even if people can create new accounts or log into existing ones not knowing if the site is gonna go dark permanently or be offline for an extended time is frustrating, encouraging people to go elsewhere.
yeah - but why also other sites having much lower traffic...
